‘Kryptogenik’
To be a quality DJ, you need some miles on the clock and some skin in the game. To understand House Music and how it should be played, needs experience, determination and a hunger to succeed. No matter the genre, no matter the tempo, House Music is a feeling that moves the body, touches the soul and inspires the listener to get up and stomp their feet. Blake Jay gets this and so much more.
First exposed to rave music in the UK with crews such as Fantasia and Raindance in the early 90s, it was not long before that itch to get behind the decks became an all-consuming obsession. Returning home to Australia in 1994, he closeted himself away with wax for the next eleven years determined to learn the craft in every exquisite detail. For those that know, it is not simply about pushing play and hoping for the best. To be a mixer par excellence requires a love for the history of House Music and how it touches the very soul.
Blake has that essential dexterity and blend of maestro and conductor enabling him to craft a night beyond the expectations of the audience. As the saying goes, a good DJ plays the songs you like. A great DJ plays the songs you never knew you liked and triggers memories that will stay with you forever. Standing still is never in Blake’s ballpark and despite being an early rave head, it is the world of Tech House and solid Funk grooves that occupy his mind today.
Playing all over Sydney and Brisbane, his sets drip with the fluid agility of a DJ at the top of his game. He has that musical muscle memory that allows his sets to flow and explore the world of constantly evolving flavours. Securing residences at Funkdafied at the Marrickville Bowlo, Our House at Monkey Magic and the SSS Boat Parties on Sydney Harbour, plus being a founding member of Sydney House Heads, Blake has been in hot demand for nearly a decade. Co-hosting a weekly show on Bondi Radio alongside Sol Michael, the duo occupies the 7 to 9 evening slot on Saturday nights.
There is no doubt that as the world engages once again with the full force of the night club scene, Blake Jay’s sets of deep melodic Tech and Funk inspired House will strike a chord with dance floors everywhere. Dynamic and brilliantly addictive, raise your hands up to the sky and discover the journey he is on. Get ready for the rising of a new dawn as Blake Jay takes his rightful place inside the booth and delivers his sermon from behind the decks.
